My Top 10 Travel Pet Peeves

Travel is one of the most romanticised things in the world! But like most things in life, if you travel a lot, there are going to be things you find annoying. This is not necessarily thingsΒ I find annoying like long queues etc. This is more things other travellers do that get on my last nerve!

  1. Not buying travel insurance: This has to be top of my list! Don’t be that person who sets up a Go Fund Me because you were to lazy to buy travel insurance. It is not expensive and you are not superhuman. And no fellow Europeans having an EHIC just won’t cut it.

  2. Holding up security: It’s been a rule for years now that you have to remove all metal, take all electrical items out of your bags and put all liquids in a clear plastic bag. If you are that person who doesn’t sort any of this out till they reach the front of the queue; then I want to punch you and I promise I’m not the only one.

  3. Being rude to staff: Yes, you are on holiday. No, that does not make you God. Please be respectful and polite. Remember that when you’re gone they mock rude customers. Seriously, it’s best to behave unless you want to be the butt of a joke.

  4. Language ignorance: I’m not claiming to have been fluent in the languages of all the places I’ve been – But I can normally manage a few words and that effort goes a long way. Contrary to popular opinion yelling English slowly will not help. You just look rude!

  5. Cultural ignorance: Please respect the customs of where you are in the world. I live exclusively in shorts when abroad and I cannot go everywhere dressed like that, which is something I accept. No matter how pretty that Greek church is don’t go in it unless you are dressed appropriately.

  6. Moaners: This is a pretty all encompassing category but oh my word you hear so much of it! Yes, sometimes travelling can be a bit of a disaster. But some of the things people say are ridiculous; if you want everything the way it is at home then stay there. (P.S: I am aware of the irony that this post is essentially just me moaning and hoping people agree)

  7. Flaunting the rules: Now I’m a goody two shoes in general. But rules on planes etc. are there for a reason. If you chose to ignore the rule that states you can’t consume alcohol purchased in the terminal, on the flight. Then you open champagne and spray the six rows around you then you are an awful person. If you chose to smoke in a tin box filled with jet fuel then the Pilot will get so angry you will fear for your life. It’s just a few hours of your life, it’s really not hard to do as you’re told for your safety and the safety of others.

  8. Toilets: This will be so unpopular but when Ryanair said they were going to make people pay to pee I applauded it. Pay to pee on short haul flights should be a thing! The amount of people who go immediately after the seatbelt sign has been switched off baffles me. If you are not ill, pregnant or have a medical condition – Then take several seats and hold it.

  9. Lanyards: This is probably cruise exclusive! But people who wear their key card around their neck on a lanyard make me cringe. You are an adult human you should be able to keep track of your key without wearing it. There is literally nothing worse then when someone is dressed for formal night in a ball gown; with a lanyard hanging around their neck. STOP PEOPLE!

  10. Show offs: This is kind of cruise exclusive, purely because I have never heard anyone brag about their air miles etc.Β  All cruise lines have loyalty tiers and when people reach the top they can be pretty insufferable. Sure when I get to the top I’ll probably wave my card around a bit. But on my last cruise there was two people loudly having an argument about who’s suite was better. We get it you’re in a suite…Now let it die because I’m 99% sure they all look the same.

Some of these you may agree with and some of these you may not; these are just the things that make me sassily roll my eyes when I’m travelling. What is your number one pet peeve when you are on your travels? Leave me a comment below and tell me what is guaranteed to annoy you.

  1. haha.. I’m gonna have to disagree with you on the lanyards. I love my cruise lanyards and we have had this no-pockets-need-my-card-and-drinks discussion before. Everything else I agree wholeheartedly πŸ™‚

  2. great post! the lanyard thing made me laugh. seriously, i can’t even. you’re right, traveling doesn’t make as God! we always have to be respectful and fair wherever we are πŸ˜€

  3. Yup, when business people don’t take out their laptops until specifically asked, it makes me want to scream. But I always have to remind myself that experience going through security comes from flying a lot, which is something many people can’t afford — so when that family or clearly first-time flyer is struggling to go fast, I try to be forgiving.

    1. I must profess that I am never forgiving! I’m always stood staring at them like um why did you not go in the family line? Such a bad tempered traveller, I love the destination part, hate the transit part

  4. LOL hahahaha this is a hilarious post….because I totally FEEL YOU on all of these! Especially the security line one. My husband rolls his eyes at me when I get visibly annoyed with people who just move through security as sloooooowly as humanly possible. Even when I’m not late for my flight, I don’t know why, but it just drives me nuts!

    1. I have no clue why it drives me insane either! Its not like we can go anywhere when we’re required to be in an airport it’s just one of those strange things that gets on your last nerve

  5. Sadly the awful Princess Medallion, which rarely ever works, leaves us with little choice other than to wear it on a lanyard. I’m certainly not going to wear it around my wrist like a bangle. Once had to get the stupid thing replaced four times as none would open my cabin door. Two hours of cruise I’ll never get back.
100% agree with your travel insurance comment.
